38-year-old woman committed suicide
BENGALURU: A 38-year-old woman committed suicide by slitting her throat even as her seven-year-old daughter was sleeping next to her in Pattanagere, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, West Bengaluru on Tuesday morning.
Sangeetha, from Vellore in Tamil Nadu, allegedly took the extreme step because of harassment by her husband Rajashekar and his parents, said her mother Shashikala.
Divorce from her husband following harassment
According to police, Sangeetha was trying to get a divorce from her husband following harassment, but he didn’t agree to it. The couple approached a family court in Mysuru, which directed the man to pay Rs 20,000 per month for her maintenance. Sangeetha shifted to Pattanagere and was facing financial problems as Rajashekar wasn’t paying her properly. She was looking for a job.
On Tuesday, when Sangeetha’s seven-year-old daughter woke up, she realized her mother wasn’t in bed. The girl thought she’d have stepped out to buy milk and got up to use the washroom. To her horror, she found her mother lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
The child tried to wake her up but in vain. She then took her mother’s cellphone and called her grandmother, but there was no response from the other end. Next, she called her aunt living in Chennai and informed her about the incident, and also alerted neighbors.
Police have registered a case of domestic harassment and abatement to suicide against Rajashekar, his mother Vijayakumari, and aunt Jayalakshmi.
